Fox finally snaps NBC’s winning streak
Baseball lifts network to first victory of the season in 18-49s
October 31, 2012
The World Series finished up Sunday night as the lowest-rated in baseball history, but it was still strong enough to help Fox snap NBC’s seven-week winning streak among adults 18-49.
Fox had the best week of the season for any network, averaging a 3.3 18-49 rating and a 9 share for the week ended Oct. 28, according to Nielsen.
NBC was second with a 2.5/7, ABC third with a 2.2/6 and CBS fourth with a 2.1/6.
Sunday’s game four pregame and game four telecast finished as the third- and fifth-highest-rated shows of the week in the demo with a 4.9 and 4.7, respectively.
And all four of the games finished in the weekly top 20.
But overall it was a disappointing series. Fox averaged a 7.6 household rating for the San Francisco Giants’ four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers, 10 percent below the previous lowest-rated series, the 2010 and 2008 editions, which both averaged an 8.4.
It was also well down from last year’s 10.0 rating for the seven-game series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers.
Certainly a large part of the low ratings can be attributed to the lack of excitement. The Giants dominated the first three games, never falling behind in the first 27 innings.
It wasn’t until game four that the Tigers showed a little spark, going into extra innings before falling 4-3.
The series never built up much momentum or excitement because of that domination. And the Tigers and Giants don’t have big national followings to begin with, which never helps.
Last week was also an abnormal one for reasons other than the World Series. The final presidential debate took place on Monday, knocking out CBS’s highly rated comedy lineup and second hours of NBC’s “The Voice” and ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”
This week may result in abnormal numbers as well, as Hurricane Sandy impacted viewership across the East Coast early this week, with storm-related preemptions and power outages cutting into normal viewing patterns.
