On Sundance,
creating a green planet

Across all media it's the new color of choice

Apr 17, 2007

One big trend in media these days is environmental consciousness. Last week Discovery announced it was launching a new eco-focused channel called PlanetGreen, following green issues released recently by magazines such as The Week, Country Home and even Sports Illustrated.

Now, two months after Al Gore won an Oscar for the global warming documentary “An Inconvenient Truth,” Sundance Channel is launching a new weekly block devoted to environmental issues.

It’s called “The Green,” and it represents the biggest programming investment the network has made since its launch 12 years ago. Each Tuesday at 9 p.m., the half-hour documentary series “Big Ideas for a Small Planet” will air. It spotlights a different topic each week, featuring ways to live more cleanly and help the environment.

Tonight’s theme is fuel, and topics include a truck that runs on used vegetable oil and testing a racing car that runs on ethanol at historic Daytona.

“Big Ideas” is followed at 9:30 by 30-minute documentaries focused on a potential crisis facing the environment. Tonight’s is “A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash,” which ponders what will happen to our planet when our oil supplies dry up.

Though green programming surely won’t speak to a huge audience, “Truth” did do well at the box office, and Sundance’s tiny audience of 25 million would seem the right audience to be engaged by such programming. They are young, with a median age of 42, and 70 percent in a recent study by the network said they think preserving the environment is very important.

The channel usually focuses on small, independent films and was founded by Robert Redford, who has a long history of environmental activism.
