All the boys just
love Sarah Silverman

Her debut breaks through on the boys club

Feb 7, 2007

Throughout its history, Comedy Central has been very much a boys club. Its best-known and most-watched shows star men like Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert and Dave Chappelle. Its highly rated Blue Collar comedy tour specials feature Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy, and even the cartoon kiddies on “South Park” are little boys.

Now finally a woman has broken through to become a hit for the network, though she’s a woman who knows how to do guy humor.

“The Sarah Silverman Program” had Comedy Central’s best debut for an original show in three years last Thursday, and it did particularly well among young men.

“Silverman” averaged a 1.3 household rating and a 1.2 in viewers 18-49, bettering the same 10:30 p.m. timeslot from a year ago by 290 percent. It grew 16 percent from its lead-in.

Among men 18-24, it was the most-watched show in the timeslot on any network, including broadcast, averaging a 3.3 rating. It won its timeslot against basic cable shows in men 18-34 and 18-49.

By comparison, “Silverman’s” debut bettered the October 2005 premiere of Colbert’s much-buzzed-about “Colbert Report” by more than a third, though that show does air an hour later.

What’s so appealing about Silverman of course is that she has the face of a model with the mouth of a trucker. People might find her delivery offensive if it came from someone less attractive, but Silverman uses her little-girl voice and big eyes to blunt the effect of her words, making her one big contradiction. Men love it.

The Comedy Central messageboard for the show has numerous posts about Silverman’s appearance and how hot she is. One poster even leaves a brief description of himself and his email address for her to contact him if she’d like to go out for a date or get married. You probably won’t find that on Chappelle or Colbert sites.

Though her humor is not as outright political as Stewart or Colbert, Silverman does push the boundaries of good taste just as much as Chappelle or “South Park,” which makes her a good fit for the network.

“When it does work, which is most of the time, ['Silverman'] nails a particular kind of out-there, button-pushing humor that Comedy Central is known for, and it builds on it,” writes Media Life’s Andrew Lyons in a review of the show.
