With 'Road Rules,'
MTV changes lanes

Reality show returns in a revamp of Tuesday lineup

Jan 30, 2007

With Nielsen debuting its long-anticipated college student viewing measurement this week, networks that appeal to a younger crowd are forecasting large viewership upticks. One of those is MTV, whose ratings have been sinking of late.

The network is in the midst of a scheduling shakeup that begins tonight with the return of old favorite “Road Rules” after almost three years away. It’s part of a greater revamp that saw the chief executive of MTV Networks leave last month after barely a year on the job.

The return of “Rules,” which will be one of the most interactive MTV shows, suggests that the network is looking to build on the past with new innovations to improve its ratings. The show kicks off an entirely new Tuesday at 9 p.m., followed by the second-season premiere of “Two-A-Days” and the new male-targeted shows “Bam’s Unholy Union,” a spinoff of sorts of “Jackass,” and “Wrestling Society X.”

Each week on “Rules,” viewers will vote on which contestant will face an elimination challenge. They will also decide who will replace the booted contestant in the show’s RV, which travels across California as the six-person team completes various missions. The contestants consist of popular players from earlier editions of the show, such as Australia’s Susie and Semester at Sea’s Veronica.

MTV could stand a lift. Ratings for MTV staples like “Real World” and celebrity reality shows have been dipping. The network’s primetime viewership fell 9 percent year to year in adults 18-34 last year, according to Nielsen data analyzed by Turner Networks.

But Nielsen’s college student measurement could help make up for that decline. Data collected during a test run in November found that viewing for some younger-skewing shows, such as Comedy Central’s “Drawn Together,” jumped by more than half when college kids were included.

Nielsen previously only measured college kids’ viewership when they were home at their parents’ houses during school breaks.
