Dished 'Dirt': Will
viewers do it again?

The new FX series premiered to huge numbers

Jan 9, 2007

The “Friends” curse hasn’t been quite so deadly as the “Seinfeld” curse, which resulted in four sitcom flops before Julia Louis-Dreyfus finally came through with “The New Adventures of Old Christine.” But it may be soon.

If tonight’s second episode of “Dirt,” the new FX drama starring “Friends’” Courteney Cox, falls significantly from last week’s solid premiere, the six friends could be on their way to bomb No. 3, with No. 4 potentially pending.

Cox plays the vicious editor of a sleazy tabloid, believed to be modeled on Star's Bonnie Fuller. In tonight’s episode, she and a photographer try to secure pictures of a starlet who committed suicide.

“Dirt” received nearly universal poor reviews from critics, save for a bit of fawning by Tom Shales of The Washington Post. Its debut averaged a very good 3.7 million total viewers and 2.4 million adults 18-49, making it the No. 1 show on cable last Tuesday. It had the best FX premiere ever in 18-34s, drawing 1.2 million.

Cox has made few acting appearances since “Friends” ended nearly three years ago, so curiosity likely drew many viewers. But they will tune out this week if they agree with critics that the show is terrible.

“Dirt” would then follow Matt LeBlanc’s “Friends” spinoff “Joey” and Lisa Kudrow’s HBO satire “The Comeback” as post-“Friends” bombs. Matthew Perry’s fading “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” is in the wait-and-see category.

The problem with all four of these shows may be that the “Friends” stars picked characters either too similar to the ones they played for years on NBC, as in the case of LeBlanc and Perry, or too over-the-top, as in the case of Cox and Kudrow. That has left audiences disappointed, hoping to see the beloved actors take on more challenging or relatable fare.
