Will to believe:
John Goodman's Santa

NBC airs a live-action remake of the 1974 special

Dec 11, 2006

Since his run on “Roseanne” ended nearly a decade ago, John Goodman has been the grinch of television. He’s appeared in two canceled CBS shows as well as one quickly snuffed Fox sitcom and NBC’s 2004 bomb “Father of the Pride.” Most recently he showed up on NBC’s “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” which has had ratings woes as well.

NBC hopes that good actor Goodman’s bad karma doesn’t extend to its ambitious live-action remake of the classic animated special “The Year Without a Santa Claus.” It premieres tonight at 9 p.m. on a night that the network has dominated thus far this season among adults 18-49.

Season to date, NBC is averaging a 5.0 on Mondays, up 32 percent over last year’s 3.8, according to Nielsen data analyzed by Fox. The rest of the Big Four networks have seen declines on the night, and NBC has won all but two Mondays this season.

It will likely add a third tonight against tough competition. In addition to “Monday Night Football,” CBS has a night of original programming scheduled, and last week ABC’s lineup got a boost with the premiere of “Supernanny.”

NBC rounded up an eclectic roster of stars for the re-imagining of the 1974 animated special, which was based on a book by Phyllis McGinley. Goodman plays Santa Claus and former “Designing Women” star Delta Burke is his wife.

The book tells the story of a boy who helps Santa believe in the Christmas spirit again. But the new movie has been updated with contemporary touches, such as “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’s” Carson Kressley as Santa’s personal dresser, Eddie Griffin as an elf with a thing for a Dr. Phil-like TV shrink, and Dr. Laura Schlessinger as that TV shrink.
