ABC's 'Betty' edges
'Survivor' clip job

Wins adults 18-49, total viewers and households

Oct 27, 2006

The World Series stole audience from just about everyone last night. But “Ugly Betty,” ABC’s new female-skewing romantic comedy, proved mostly immune to the baseball drain, and that helped the show push past CBS’s timeslot competitor “Survivor” among adults 18-49 and total viewers for the first time.

Last night “Betty” averaged a 4.2 in 18-49s and 13.2 million total viewers in the 8 p.m. timeslot, according to Nielsen overnights. “Survivor” averaged a 4.1 and 12.6 million.

“Survivor” was actually a clip show, in which no one was booted though some never-seen footage aired, but it still finished with the lowest rating ever for a regularly scheduled original episode of the show, which has been wilting opposite “Betty” in recent weeks though maintaining a big lead in 18-49s.

The two have been neck and neck in households, where “Betty” averaged an 8.9 rating and “Survivor” a 7.7 last night.

“Betty” was down just a tad from the previous week, likely because its female viewers weren’t switching over to the World Series. Among women 18-49 and 18-34, the show was equal to the previous week.

Meanwhile, “Survivor’s” average was down double-digit percentages week to week in men 18-49 and 18-34.

Fox won the night with its Game 4 World Series coverage, with the bulk of NBC, ABC and CBS’s schedules in reruns. As a reminder, overnight ratings average timeslot data and not actual program data. The baseball game lasted well past 11 p.m., so final ratings will adjust significantly when they are released later today.

Fox averaged a 4.5 rating and 12 share for the night, followed by ABC at 4.1/11, CBS at 4.0/11, NBC at 3.0/8, the CW at 1.9/5, and Univision at 1.5/4.

The diminished competition helped several shows tie or set season highs. The CW’s original “Smallville” and “Supernatural” both matched season bests in 18-49s, while soon-to-relocate “Deal or No Deal” on NBC hit a season best for the night in total viewers, with 11.1 million total viewers.

At 8 p.m. among 18-49s, “Betty” led with a 4.2, followed by “Survivor” at 4.1, Fox’s baseball at 3.5, NBC’s “My Name is Earl” (2.8) and “The Office” (2.7) reruns at 2.7, the CW’s “Smallville” at 2.2, and Univision’s “La Fea Mas Bella” at 1.9.

At 9 p.m., CBS’s “CSI” rerun led with a 5.0, followed by Fox’s baseball at 4.9, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” rerun at 4.5, NBC’s “Deal or No Deal” at 3.5, the CW’s “Supernatural” at 1.7, and Univision’s “Mundo de Fieras” at 1.4.

At 10 p.m., Fox led with a 5.3 for baseball, followed by ABC’s “Grey’s” repeat at 3.8, CBS’s “Shark” repeat at 2.9, NBC’s “ER” repeat at 2.6, and Univision’s “Aqui y Ahora” at 1.1.

Among households, Fox led with a 9.4/15, followed by CBS at 8.5/13, ABC at 8.1/13, NBC at 5.5/9, CW at 2.5/4, and Univision at 1.9/3.
