The inside dope:
'Weeds' on Showtime

The network may not have the cachet of HBO

Aug 14, 2006

As HBO falters, with new shows like “Lucky Louie” flopping and stalwarts like “Sopranos” and “Deadwood” on their way out, Showtime may have taken over its mantle for best pay cable original programming.

Its new Sunday show “Brotherhood” is to politics as “Sopranos” is to the mob, and in many ways, “Brotherhood” is more compelling. The most recent season of “The L Word” generated almost as much buzz as “Entourage.” And tonight at 10 p.m. marks the return of “Weeds,” the dramedy about a pot-dealing suburban soccer mom, which may be Showtime’s best program.

It’s already the most watched, drawing an average 1.6 million viewers last season. By comparison, that’s a million fewer than “Entourage” is averaging, but Showtime’s 14.5 million subscribers are barely half HBO’s 28 million.

Yet Showtime is up 1.5 million subscribers, or 12 percent, from the same time last year, according to analyst estimates, and its subscriber base could keep growing with shows like “Weeds” becoming a bigger draw. Earlier this year, Mary-Louise Parker, who plays a widow who joins the dope trade to pay her bills, bested all four “Desperate Housewives” to win the Best Actress in a Comedy Golden Globe. That got the show lots of buzz.

And in its second season, the plots sound promising. Parker’s Nancy has hooked up with a new boyfriend. Only problem is, he’s also a Drug Enforcement Administration agent who clearly wouldn’t approve of his girlfriend’s profession. Other storylines on tap include Nancy’s brother-in-law attending rabbinical school, though only to get out of serving in Iraq, and her youngest son, Shane, entering puberty.
