In an era when ratings for traditional awards shows such as the Oscars, Emmys and Golden Globes are dipping, viewership for younger-skewing, hipper programs like the “BET Awards” and ESPN’s “ESPY Awards” has been going up.
In addition to cooler stars and fun award categories, these shows provide something that the older ones almost never do: surprises.
Last week Univision’s three-year-old “Premios Juventud 2006,” or Youth Awards, kept the identity of its hosts a secret until the moment they arrived on stage, causing rampant online speculation. That helped “Juventud” become the latest awards show to earn record audiences.
Among teens 12-17, the show drew 600,000 viewers, placing No. 1 for the night and No. 5 for the week on all of broadcast in that demo. It was up 44 percent over last year.
It was only the second time this season that a Univision broadcast has ranked No. 1 in that demographic.
Among kids 2-11, “Premios” also finished No. 1 for the night on broadcast, drawing 868,000 viewers, 20 percent better than last year. Both marked records for the show.
It was the latest in a string of impressive showings by Univision, which has frequently ranked No. 2 or 3 in the younger demos in the weekly rankings this summer.
Certainly part of it is that Univision is airing new programming while the networks, notably UPN and the WB, offer a limited number of original shows and few of those appealing to kids.
But the network also recognizes that to draw a young audience to an award show, it must have some sort of spectacle, and “Juventud” provided plenty of that.
The night’s opening number, performed in an arena rather than the usual staid theaters of most award shows, included a yacht, a helicopter, two scuba divers and a bunch of sharks. At the end, Mexican television personalities Alessandra Rosaldo and Jan, she of the toned, often bare midriff, he of the dreamy tousled hair, took off their scuba masks and stayed on to host the program.
Shakira, Thalia, hot Hispanic band RBD and more actually attended the awards. Univision also helped hook in viewers by giving them a say in who took home prizes: Kids voted beforehand on Univision.com to determine the winners.
The actual award categories ranged from sports to entertainment, including Most Electrifying Male Athlete (New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez), What a Hottie! (RBD member Alfonso Herrera), Best Moves (Shakira) and Actress Who Steals the Show (Jessica Alba).
Meanwhile, in broadcast and basic cable ratings for younger viewers for the week ended July 16:
Among teens 12-17: Fox was first at 1.6, trailed by NBC in second with a 1.1 and Univision and UPN tied at third with a 1.0, followed by ABC and CBS at 0.8, WB at 0.7, and Telemundo and Telefutura at 0.2.
Among kids 2-11: Fox led with a 1.2, followed by Univision at 1.1, NBC at 0.9, ABC at 0.8, UPN at 0.7, CBS at 0.6, WB at 0.4, and Telemundo and Telefutura at 0.2.
The top five shows among 9-14s: 1. “Fairly Odd Parents” (Nickelodeon, Tuesday 1:30 p.m.); 2. “Drake & Josh” (Nickelodeon, Tuesday 5:30 p.m.); 3. “Ned Declassified” (Nickelodeon, Wednesday 6 p.m.); 4. “SpongeBob SquarePants” (Nickelodeon, Tuesday 5 p.m.); 5. “Drake & Josh” (Nickelodeon, Monday 5:30 p.m.)
The top five shows among 12-17s: 1. “My Super Sweet Sixteen” (MTV, Tuesday 10:30 p.m.); 2. “So You Think You Can Dance” (Fox, Wednesday 9 p.m.); 3. “WWE Entertainment” (USA, Monday 10 p.m.); 3. “Naruto” (Cartoon Network, Saturday 10:30 p.m.); 5. “Family Guy” (Adult Swim, Wednesday 11:30 p.m.)
