Real growth for the
World Cup is kids


Two-to-11s up 223 percent and teens 365 percent

Univision has seen record-breaking audiences for its World Cup coverage and growth of more than 100 percent in many demographics compared with the 2002 Cup.

But nowhere has that growth been more dramatic than among younger viewers. Through last Saturday’s first- and second-round coverage, Univision’s World Cup viewership for kids 2-11 was up 223 percent, from 101,000 to an average 226,000 per game.

Among teens 12-17, the growth was even more dramatic, up 365 percent, from 53,000 to 191,000. By comparison, the fastest-growing adult demographic is adults 18-49, which was up 147 percent, to 1.36 million.

And that’s not just Hispanic, Spanish-speaking kids tuning in. Univision hasn’t offered any estimates for this World Cup, but during the 2002 Cup, across all age groups, more than 40 percent of Univision’s viewers were English speakers. If that holds true this time, it could mean much of the kids’ growth is coming from non-Hispanics.

Certainly one explanation for the jump is the more favorable game times with the Cup airing from Germany instead of Japan and Korea. This year’s Cup games have been broadcast in the kid-friendly 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. window in contrast to 2002, when the games aired at 2 or 3 in the morning. Many parents did not let their kids stay up so late to watch those games.

But that does not explain the jump entirely. Compared with 1998, when the World Cup was also airing in Europe, kids’ demos have still seen dramatic growth, up 125 percent in teens and 73 percent in 2-11s.

Perhaps the better explanation is the increasing popularity of soccer among teens and thus the desire to watch it on TV. Long popular among younger kids who moved on to basketball and football in high school, soccer participation for teens is growing.

According to numbers from the National Federation of State High School Associations, prep school soccer participation rose 5 percent among boys, from 339,101 to 354,587, from the 2001-’02 school year to last year, the most recent numbers available. Participation growth among girls was even more dramatic, up 7 percent from 295,265 to 316,104.

If that doesn’t seem like a particularly big jump, consider that girls’ and boys’ basketball participation grew less than 1 percent in that time.

Soccer is now the fourth-most popular high school sport, behind basketball, football, and track and field.

There’s one other thing that could account for some of Univision’s dramatic growth, and that is the increase in the young Hispanic population overall. There are simply more of them, and thus more of them watching Spanish-language TV. According to the U.S. Census Bureau projections, the number of Hispanics ages 10-19 grew 32 percent from 2001 to 2005, from 5.23 million to 6.93 million.

Meanwhile, in broadcast and basic cable ratings for younger viewers for the week ended June 25:
 
Among teens 12-17: Fox led with a 1.7, followed by ABC at 1.1, NBC at 1.0, Univision at 0.9, CBS at 0.8, the WB at 0.6, and Telemundo and Telefutura at 0.2

Among kids 2-11: Fox led with a 1.3, followed by ABC and Univision tied for second at 1.0. NBC was fourth at 0.9, followed by CBS and UPN at 0.7, the WB at 0.4, and Telemundo and Telefutura tied at 0.2.
