TV This Week

Puzzle of 'Kyle XY,'
w/o a belly button

New ABC Family series will re-air on ABC

Jun 26, 2006

Thus far this summer, cable crossovers have not done very well on the broadcast networks. An hour-long series recap of “The 4400,” which aired on NBC a week before the show’s third season premiered on sister network USA, was the lowest-rated show of the night on June 3, and reruns of FX’s “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” have bombed Sunday nights following “Family Guy.”

ABC hopes to do better tonight with the new show “Kyle XY,” which premieres at 8 p.m. on ABC Family. The 60-minute drama will reair weekly on ABC on Fridays at 9 p.m. for at least the series’ first four weeks.

ABC Family certainly has high expectations for “Kyle XY.” It also made the show’s pilot available for free download on Apple’s iTunes during the week before its premiere.

"Kyle" follows a teenage boy of that name who is found wandering on a busy road, coated in goop and unable to express any emotions. Most creepy, he has no belly button. He moves in with the otherwise normal family of a psychiatrist and quickly begins to demonstrate amazing intelligence.

The big question is, where did he come from?

This is the first time an ABC Family show has been repurposed on ABC, which bought the network from Fox five years ago.

It’s hoping that “Kyle” follows the path of more successful past summer cable crossovers, such as USA’s “Monk” and Bravo’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,” thus drawing more viewers to the ABC Family originals.

For ABC, it’s almost a can’t-fail strategy. “Hope & Faith” reruns in the 9 p.m. Friday timeslot averaged just a 1.2 adults 18-49 rating last week. “Kyle” could do at least that well.
