Celebrating the ordinary, with style

There's nothing quite as ordinary as a New York bus stop, except for perhaps a New York phone booth or a New York subway car.

Which was precisely the point behind a recent guerilla campaign put on by IKEA, the Swedish furnishing chain.

Street teams swept across Manhattan decorating bus stops, phone booths and subways. They set up cozy seating arrangements in parks and placed cupfuls of pens at ATM kiosks.

The campaign's tagline was “Good design can make the everyday a little better,” and it was put on last week to promote the IKEA Everyday Fabulous Exhibit, in conjunction with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, which was held in New York May 20-23.

“In honor of design week, we really wanted to use that as a platform for our point of view on good design,” says IKEA spokesperson Wendy Clark.

The exhibit itself featured different IKEA products used in rather unconventional ways. It was set up at a location across from the Javits Center where the fair was being held.
