'Real World' in the
path of a real storm

Caught on camera: Cast and crew fleeing Rita

Apr 18, 2006

The title of MTV’s “The Real World” is misleading. The show’s college-aged cast faces few actual real-world problems, unless you consider deciding how many girls to invite to the hot tub party a real-life dilemma.

That changes, however, on tonight’s episode of “Real World: Key West” when the seven housemates are greeted by a very real problem named Hurricane Rita, which hit land in Florida while MTV was filming last August.

The storm’s eye slid just south of Key West, forcing everyone in the area, including the cast and crew of “Real World,” to evacuate. MTV didn’t comment on the matter at the time of the storm, but various reports said the cast went to West Palm Beach, Fla., until it was safe to return.

Tonight we will find out, as the cameras kept rolling the entire time. It will provide a rare and fascinating glimpse at the many concerns facing those in the path of a hurricane, more than six months after Rita and Katrina roiled the entire Gulf Coast.

It will also be interesting to watch the preparations now that we understand, these many months later, just how serious those storms turned out to be.

Not that “Real World” really needs a ratings boost. The show is one of this season’s top-rated programs on cable among its target 12-34 audience, as usual.
