Broadcast premiere week by the numbers
Which new shows had the best bows and which picked up with DVRs
September 26, 2016
Another premiere week has come and gone, and this year it brought arguably more surprises than usual.
While media buyers and planners worry about the continued shift in media habits, enough new shows posted decent numbers to reaffirm that TV is the only medium capable of drawing a mass audience.
Of course, a handful of new shows also struggled, and barring a big uptick in DVR viewing, they probably won’t last too long into the season.
Here’s a look at the highs and lows of premiere week, by the numbers.
2.8 – Adults 18-49 rating for NBC’s “This is Us,” the week’s highest-rated new show premiere
3.1 – rating for last year’s highest-rated premiere week debut, NBC’s “Blindspot”
1.0 – rating for Fox’s “The Exorcist,” the week’s lowest-rated new show premiere
1.1 – rating for last year’s lowest-rated premiere week debut, Fox’s “Minority Report”
1.93 – average rating for all 11 new shows bowing this past week
1.9 – average rating for all 14 new shows bowing during last year’s premiere week
2.4 – rating for the 13th season premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy,” the network’s No. 2 show of the week
19 percent – decline for “The Big Bang Theory,” the week’s top comedy with a 3.8, versus last year’s debut
37 percent – decline for “Empire,” the week’s top drama with a 4.2, versus last year’s debut
2.2 – season premiere rating for “NCIS,” an all-time low for the 14-year-old drama
1.4 – ratings increase for “This is Us” with three-day DVR playback, a record for NBC and the biggest for any new show since the series premiere of “Empire”
82 percent – gain for ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” with L+3, a series record
NBC holds steady among 18-49s on Thursday
