Bad vibrations: NYC nixes vibrator giveaway

August 10, 2012

Call it the ultimate buzzkill, so to speak.

On Wednesday hundreds of women lined up in New York City to receive free vibrators courtesy of condom maker Trojan from its so-called pleasure cart, a hot dog-style vending cart that dispensed vibrators rather than real meat.

Alas the event was broken up early by the city, which said the company did not have the proper permits for the promotion.

Many women (and a few men) were angry. One even lambasted New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has recently campaigned against super-sized cola sales in the city, calling him the enemy of all that is fun, including sodas and sex toys.

But there was a happy ending to this tale. On Thursday, armed with the proper permits and this time stationed rather appropriately in the city's Meatpacking district, Trojan proceeded with the giveaway and once again drew gigantic crowds.

The company gave away 3,600 vibrators, at a value of $30 to $40 apiece, in just two hours.
