the darnedest TV shows They've proved it again with 'Opportunity Knocks' Oct 3, 2008
But among kids 2-11, “Knocks” was actually the top-ranked new show during premiere week, proving once more that kids’ and adults’ tastes are often quite different. “Knocks” averaged a 1.5 rating among 2-11s, according to Nielsen data for the week ended Sept. 28, finishing just behind lead-out “Dancing with the Stars’” 1.6 as the No. 2 show on Tuesday night in the demo. “Knocks” won its 8 p.m. timeslot by bettering Fox’s hit “House” and Univision’s “Cuidado Con El Angel,” which does well with kids. “Knocks” had the best debut for any new show in the demo, finishing 0.2 ahead of the No. 2 new show, NBC’s “Knight Rider.” Just like “Knocks,” “Rider” was a standout only among kids, delivering disappointing ratings among 18-49s. Meanwhile, “Fringe,” the top-rated new show among adults, managed a mere 0.7 among 2-11s. The solid numbers among 2-11s for “Knocks” and “Rider” don’t mean much in the bigger picture. They certainly won’t save the programs from cancellation, should their adults 18-49 numbers remain low. Mostly the ratings just serve as a reminder of how few family-oriented shows there are on broadcast. Most of the new ones, including “Fringe,” CBS’s “Worst Week” and soon-to-premiere “Eleventh Hour,” and CW’s “90210,” are too sophisticated for young viewers. Thus shows like “Knocks,” in which families engage in trivia contests about each other, and “Rider,” about a guy with a cool car, will draw kids simply by default, regardless of their quality. Both shows received poor reviews. Still, the highest-rated shows overall among 2-11s last week were all returning programs, mirroring a trend also seen among adults. The Monday “Stars” premiere was the week’s top-ranked show in the demo, averaging a 3.0. Wednesday’s “Stars” results show and Sunday’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” premiere, both on ABC, tied for second with 2.3s. Fox’s “The Simpsons” placed fourth with a 2.0. *** Meanwhile, in other younger viewer ratings for the week ending Sept. 28: Among teens 12-17, Fox led with a 1.8 rating and 6 share, followed by ABC at 1.7/6, NBC and the CW at 1.4/5, CBS at 1.3/5, Univision at 1.1/4, Telemundo at 0.2/1,Telefutura at 0.1/1 and Azteca at 0.0/0.
