Messing in the
kitchen with 'Chowder'

He lives in place called Marzipan and he's a cook

Nov 30, 2007

When veteran “SpongeBob SquarePants” storyboard artist and writer C.H. Greenblatt began dreaming up a new show for Cartoon Network, he couldn’t stop thinking about Mickey Mouse in the famous “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” cartoon, a trainee with the best intentions who often ends up in trouble.

That led Greenblatt to Chowder. Chowder is only a kid, but he’s already training to become a master chef. He lives in the magical city of Marzipan, where he’s charged with simmering singing beans till they can perform and whipping up half-ton cakes.

It all sounds a little strange, but kids seem to love it. Nearly a month into its run, the new show has become Cartoon’s No. 1 program among kids 2-11 and 6-11.

“Chowder” is averaging 848,000 viewers 2-11, about 50,000 better than No. 2 show “Ben 10,” in its 7:30 p.m. Friday timeslot, according to Nielsen numbers provided by CN. Among 6-11s, it’s averaging 597,000 viewers, 41,000 ahead of “Ben.”

The show has also passed “The Grim Adventures of Bill & Mandy,” on which Greenblatt worked previously, to become Cartoon’s top Friday show.

“It was an important thing for me to have a real kid who’s sweet and innocent, but chaotic,” Greenblatt says. “He has no self control, but you couldn’t help liking him when he messed up.”

The show got a boost from positive pre-debut reviews on cartoon-focused sites like Cartoon Brew and News-a-Rama. The New York Times even reviewed the show, though its take was a bit more critical.

That likely alerted parents to the new show by the “SpongeBob” alum, plus Cartoon ran loads of promotions for the program before its Nov. 2 debut.

Still, the biggest reason for “Chowder’s” success is undoubtedly the humor. With food often flying and the occasional pea/pee joke, it combines the physical and pun-inspired humor kids love.

“It’s the same sensibility as in the old Warner Bros. cartoons,” Greenblatt says. “We’re not trying to reinvent cartoons, just make kids get that sense of wonder.”

“Chowder’s” success couldn’t come at a better time for Cartoon. The network’s total-day average was down 2 percent among 2-11s during November, from 607,000 to 592,000, and 7 percent among 6-11s, from 414,000 to 384,000, and it saw even steeper declines during third quarter.
