ABC's 'Wipeout' and 'Japanese Game Show' are tops

Forget TGIF. This summer, ABC has TGIT, as in Tuesday night, where it airs the season’s top two shows among kids.

Unscripted fare accounts for nine of the top 10 programs among kids 2-11 this summer, and the new ABC Tuesday shows “Wipeout” and “I Survived a Japanese Game Show” are far ahead of the nearest competition.

“Wipeout” leads with a 3.0 average through its first three outings, according to Nielsen data measuring the period of May 26 to July 9. “Survived” is No. 2 at a 2.3, 21 percent ahead of third-place “Friday Night Smackdown” on the CW, which is averaging a 1.9.

“Wipeout” is also a hit among adults 18-49, where it averaged a 4.0 in last Tuesday’s 8 p.m. timeslot. But “Survived” has not performed as well, holding just 68 percent of its lead-in and finishing third in the 9 p.m. timeslot.

By contrast, among 2-11s, “Survived” is holding 77 percent of its lead-in and also winning its timeslot against strong competition like Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen,” which ranks eighth in the demo, and NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” which ranks sixth.

Perhaps it’s not surprising that “Survived’s” zany humor resonates better with children than adults. Watching contestants in giant chicken costumes try to break eggs with their butt has a cartoonish feel to it that the very young crowd can appreciate. To adults, it might just seem stupid.

ABC also has the lone scripted series in the top 10 this summer, Saturday night’s “Wonderful World of Disney,” which ranks fourth overall with a 1.9 rating.

ABC, Fox and NBC all have three shows in the top 10, and Fox has the second-highest-rated scripted series with “Family Guy” reruns at No. 12.

The top entry for CBS, which has launched fewer summer shows than its competitors thus far, comes at No. 33 with reruns of “Two and a Half Men.”
