and 'One Tree Hill' CW is getting its act together on Monday night Apr 25, 2008
Now, the CW, the channel that morphed out of the merger of the WB and UPN, finally seems to have found its way back to that once-promising formula by pairing the new show “Gossip Girl” and veteran “One Tree Hill” on Monday nights for a night of steamy soaps. In their first outing together earlier this week, the two drew good teen numbers. The CW averaged a 2.0 rating in 12-17s on Monday, tying Fox’s 2.0 in the demo for first. Among female teens, it was a solid first with a 3.0 average. That’s more than double the network’s season-to-date Monday night average in teens, a 0.9. And it’s better than the 1.2 the network averaged on Mondays in its inaugural season last year, too. The two also combined for the best Monday in adults 18-34 ever for the nearly 2-year-old network, which has struggled to program the night with comedies and, briefly last year, the final season of “Seventh Heaven.” Somewhat surprisingly, considering all the hype around “Girl’s” return, the 5-year-old “Hill” actually had the higher rating among teens. Its 2.3 won the 9 p.m. hour, 15 percent ahead of second-place Fox and 21 percent better than its previous season average. While “Girl” performed solidly, finishing second to Fox in the 8 p.m. slot, it averaged a 1.7 rating, behind “Hill.” Monday is “Hill’s” third different night in just a year. The show returned at midseason during the thick of the writers’ strike, airing on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. following “Beauty and the Geek.” It faced a couple of two-hour “American Idol” episodes and had a much weaker lead-in than last year, when it aired Wednesdays after “America’s Next Top Model.” But on Mondays it’s a much better fit with “Girl.” The latter focuses on rowdy high schoolers, which used to be the focus of “Hill.” When the show was renewed last year, however, the writers decided to fast-forward several years in the future, skipping the kids’ university years and catching up with their post-college lives.
