Among teens,
Fox rules with cartoons

Network has top five shows in the 12-17 demographic

Nov 21, 2008

Among kids 2-11, reality is the hot genre on broadcast. But among their older siblings, it’s animated comedies that rule, and that has boosted Fox to a substantial lead this season among teens 12-17.

With all of the season’s top five shows in the demo, the network is averaging a 1.7 rating and 6 share in 12-17s, according to Nielsen data. That’s 21 percent ahead of second-place ABC at 1.4/5.

CBS is third at 1.3/5, NBC fourth at 1.2/4 and the CW fifth at 1.1/4. All five networks are down double-digit percentages from last year, with MyNetworkTV, which inherited “Friday Night Smackdown” from the CW this year, the only English-language broadcast network to show gains. It’s up 150 percent, to a 0.5/2.

Fox’s animated Sunday block dominates the top programs in the demo, accounting for four of the top five. “Family Guy” ranks first with a 5.0 average, well ahead of No. 2 “American Dad” at 3.9.

“The Simpsons” is third at 3.9, with “King of the Hill” fifth at 3.2. At No. 4, Fox’s “House” is the lone non-animated show in the top five, averaging a 3.3.

Not surprisingly, Fox’s Sunday is also the highest-rated night of the week among 12-17s with a 3.7 average.

With “American Idol” set to return in January, there’s little doubt that Fox will continue its No. 1 ranking with teens through the spring. The network, which is tied for third among 18-49s with NBC this season, has won eight straight seasons among teens and 14 of the past 17.

Besides animated comedies, scripted serialized programs are also hot with teens this year. NBC’s “Heroes” and ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Desperate Housewives” all rank in the top 10.

The CW’s teen-focused “Gossip Girl” ranks in the top 20 with a 1.9 average. It’s tied with “Supernatural” as the highest-rated show among teens on the network.

But with the exception of “Gossip,” teens didn’t warm to most of last year’s new shows. NBC’s “Lipstick Jungle” and “Life” and ABC’s “Dirty Sexy Money” rank among the lowest-rated shows with teens, ahead of only a handful of Saturday encores and the CW’s now-canceled Sunday lineup.
