Among kids at
least, ABC is still tops

Holds a comfortable lead among children 2 to 11

***image1***CBS has caught up to ABC this fall among adults 18-49, but among the much younger set, ABC is maintaining a comfortable lead thanks to its stable of reality shows.

Season to date, ABC is averaging a 1.2 rating and 5 share among kids 2-11, with three of the season’s top five shows in the demo.

The network is 20 percent ahead of second-place Fox’s 1.0/4. CBS is third at 0.8/4, followed by NBC at 0.8/3 and the CW at 0.4/2.

ABC’s lead is thanks almost entirely to nonscripted shows, which continue to be the most popular programs with young children on broadcast. Six of the top 10 shows are reality programs, and four run on ABC.

The 8 p.m. edition of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” ranks first overall with a 2.5 average, just ahead of the network’s “Dancing with the Stars,” which is tied for second with Fox’s “The Simpsons.”

MyNetworkTV’s “Friday Night Smackdown” is fourth at 2.2, and the “Stars” results show ranks fifth at 2.2.

Reality has dominated 2-11s for years, and several unscripted programs have performed much better with kids than with their older counterparts this season.

“Opportunity Knocks,” for example, the new reality/game show that ABC benched several weeks ago, is tied for No. 14 on the season among 2-11s with a 1.4 average and ranked No. 1 in its Tuesday 8 p.m. timeslot. Among adults 18-49, the show was a distant fourth in its timeslot.

CBS’s “The Amazing Race” is tied for 14th this season among 2-11s, averaging a 1.4 rating, though it ranked only 24th among 18-49s last week.

And ABC stalwart “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” now in its 19th season, remains a top-10 staple for kids, placing ninth with a 1.6 average. Among 18-49s, it tied for 63rd last week.

On the flip side, one show youngsters clearly have not embraced that’s growing on their parents is NBC’s “30 Rock.” The comedy, which is seeing big gains over last year among 18-49s, is tied for 83rd with 2-11s with a 0.5 average.
