Among kids, Fox
is closing in on ABC

It's now No. 2 among 2-11s for the first three weeks

Oct 19, 2007

It will be months before fourth-place Fox closes the gap with leader ABC among adults 18-49, where the two are expected to compete for the season-long lead when “American Idol” returns.

But with another demographic, kids 2-11, Fox has jumped from fourth place at this time last year to second, just 0.1 behind leader ABC and the only network showing year-to-year growth in the demographic.

ABC still leads, as it did this time last year, with a 1.2 rating for the first three weeks of the season, according to Nielsen live-plus-same-day digital video recorder data analyzed by Magna Global. It’s down 8 percent from a 1.3 last year.

Fox is second at 1.1, up 22 percent from last year’s 0.9, while NBC is third at 1.0, down 9 percent from last year’s 1.1. CBS is fourth and seeing the most losses at 0.9, 18 percent down from last year, when it was tied for second with NBC at 1.1.

The CW is fifth with a 0.8, down 11 percent from last year, when it was tied for fourth with Fox at 0.9.

Fox has seen its numbers rise among youngsters for several reasons, one certainly being the great reduction in the number of postseason baseball games on the network. Only two had aired during the rating period measured by Magna Global, compared with four to this point last year, and that's helped the network's ratings across many demographics.

Also, kids don’t tend to stay up late on school nights to watch games, leading to relatively low ratings in those demographics for the baseball playoffs.

But another boost has come from Fox’s Thursday lineup. Though “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” lags NBC, CBS and ABC in most demographics, among kids 2-11 it often places second in its 8 p.m. timeslot, behind only CBS’s “Survivor: China.”

And “Lyrics,” an afterthought in its tough 9 p.m. hour among 18-49s, tied ABC’s hit “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2-11s during the latter’s second episode with a 1.3.

Fox’s Sunday cartoon lineup has also knocked off some tough competition, with “Family Guy” and “American Dad” bettering ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” at 9 p.m. two of the last three weeks.

Of course the continued success of “House,” which last week averaged a 1.6, has helped Fox build up Tuesday night among 2-11s. Lead-in “Bones” won its timeslot in that demographic last week, one of the few in which it claimed victory.
