Univision rises to No. 1 Zips past Fox at the end of the regular season Jun 29, 2007 A new and surprisingly dominant leader has emerged among kids 2-11 in this otherwise dull summer. Univision has finished first in the demo for four straight weeks, dating back to the end of the regular TV season and displacing usual leader Fox. What’s more, it’s winning by large margins, and it’s doing it not just on the strength of the recently ended hit telenovela “La Fea Mas Bella.” Last week, the week ended June 24, Univision recorded its largest margin of victory yet this summer, averaging a 1.3 rating and 6 share. That was 44 percent ahead of Fox’s 0.9/4, and it more than tripled the CW and CBS, which tied for fifth at 0.4/2. The 1.3 averaged tied for its best week since the regular season ended in late May. Univision was the only broadcast network to see a year-to-year increase over the same week in 2006, up 9 percent from a 1.1/5. Certainly all the English-language broadcast networks are struggling this summer, with new shows tanking and ratings for reruns declining. But in addition to diluted competition, a good part of Univision’s dominance is due to one of its newer telenovelas, “Destilando Amor,” a steamy romance about a field worker whose tryst with a rich man changes her life. It debuted in April. Among kids 2-11, the show ranked behind only “Bella” and NBC’s hit reality series “America’s Got Talent” last week. The show, which airs weeknights at 9 p.m., won or tied for the lead in its timeslot four nights last week in 2-11s. In fact, “Destilando” even bettered Fox hits “Hell’s Kitchen” and “So You Think You Can Dance” head to head, and averaged a 1.6 rating for the week. Last year, Univision’s 9 p.m. show “Barrera de Amor” averaged just a 1.3 in the demo the same week, a difference of 19 percent. That’s promising for Univision, and it could help the network continue its dominance with “Bella,” one of the most successful series in network history, now off the air. Monday’s two-hour finale and one-hour cast reunion on the talk show “Cristina” delivered more kids 2-11 than the Big Four networks combined, 1.07 million. But the program Univision chose to replace “Fea” has not done nearly as well. “Yo Amo a Juan Querendon” aired half-hour episodes last week at 8:30, behind the final week of 30-minute “Fea” shows in a smart launch strategy. “Juan” routinely lost a quarter of “Fea’s” lead-in, making “Destilando’s” numbers that much more impressive. It built on “Juan” every night but one.
