With ABC's 'Bingo,'
not your usual hit

Actually a bomb in the ratings, pulling a 0.9

Jun 27, 2007
Share |

The ratings for ABC’s “National Bingo Night” were so low that it would be easy to dismiss the new game show as a disaster. But the program, which aired its season finale Friday night, was actually a huge hit online.

Though that may not be enough to guarantee a second season, it may be sufficient to ensure that the show lives on in some capacity, perhaps as a web-only program or a series of specials.

The finale of “Night” averaged just a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating Friday at 9 p.m., tied for third in its timeslot behind two shows that have already been canceled, CBS’s “Close to Home” and Fox’s “Standoff.”

It averaged 3.44 million total viewers, nearly 2 million fewer than “Home,” and ranked 67th on that measure last week on broadcast.

For most shows, especially one whose May launch was repeatedly promoted on ABC hits like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives” during sweeps, that would spell cancellation.

But “Bingo’s” surprising web success could give it a second life. More than 3 million play-at-home bingo grids were downloaded from the show’s page on ABC.com during the week of its May 18 premiere, and that number increased in the following weeks.

“Bingo” also attracted the most visits to any TV show page for the week ended June 16, the most recent available, according to internet traffic tracker Hitwise.

The site drew 37 percent of all traffic in the television category, more than the other top nine destinations combined. By comparison, No. 2 “Deal or No Deal” drew 9 percent.

An ABC spokesperson says nothing has been decided yet about a potential second season of “Bingo,” but if it goes forward there will be an online component. The network also points out that the show won its timeslot in 18-49s over its six-week run, averaging a 1.4 rating, and held 100 percent of its lead-in.

Repeats of “Bingo” are available at ABC.com, along with the network’s other summer shows. Last year the network was the first to make such first-run broadcast programs available online, but while CBS and NBC have launched several online-only series in the time since, ABC’s extras consist mostly of cutesy quizzes, contests and music extras.

“Bingo” was cheap to produce, and it could be an ideal online extension, especially in a summer where no new shows are generating excitement on broadcast.

Meanwhile, in broadcast ratings for the week ended June 24:

Among adults 18-49, Fox led with a 2.2 average rating and a 7 share, followed by NBC at 2.1/7, CBS at 1.7/5, Univision at 1.5/5, ABC at 1.4/4, CW at 0.7/2, MyNetworkTV and Telemundo at 0.4/1, Telefutura at 0.3/1, Ion at 0.2/0 and Azteca at 0.0/0.

Among adults 18-34, Fox led with a 2.2 average rating and an 8 share, followed by NBC and Univision at 1.7/6, ABC at 1.1/4, CBS at 1.0/4, CW at 0.7/2, Telemundo and Telefutura at 0.4/1, MyNetworkTV at 0.3/1, Ion at 0.1/0 and Azteca at 0.0/0.

Among adults 25-54, NBC led with a 2.4 average rating and a 7 share, followed by Fox at 2.3/7, CBS at 2.2/7, ABC at 1.6/5, Univision at 1.4/4, CW at 0.7/2, Telemundo and MyNetworkTV at 0.4/1, Telefutura at 0.3/1, Ion at 0.2/1 and Azteca at 0.0/0.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): 1. NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” 4.4; 2. NBC’s “Dateline -- Monday” 4.1; 3. Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance -- Wednesday” 3.8; 4. Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen,” 3.5; 5. Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance -- Thursday” 3.4.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” 12.51 million; 2. NBC’s “Dateline -- Monday” 12.21 million; 3. NBC’s “Deal or No Deal” 12.06 million; 4. NBC’s “Law & Order: SVU” 9.46 million; 5. CBS’s “NCIS” 9.35 million.

Bottom five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): Tie-92. CW’s “Hidden Palms,” “Reba -- Sunday” and “Veronica Mars” 0.5; Tie-95. CW’s “Supernatural -- Sunday” and “7th Heaven” 0.4.

Bottom five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 92. CW’s “Reba -- Sunday” 1.40 million; 93. CW’s “Hidden Palms” 1.28 million; 94. CW’s “Veronica Mars” 1.19 million; 95. CW’s “7th Heaven” 1.13 million; 96. CW’s “Supernatural -- Sunday” 1.08 million.

Show on the rise: “Dateline,” NBC, Monday 10 p.m. Matt Lauer’s interview with Princes Harry and William was a hit with young viewers, as “Dateline” posted a 4.1 rating among viewers 18-49, a 64 percent increase versus a 2.5 the week before.

Shows on the decline: “So You Think You Can Dance,” Fox, Thursday 9 p.m. Might the one-hour results show be a little too drawn out? Last week’s results show earned a season-low 3.4 rating among 18-49s, off 15 percent from a 4.0 the week before.
