Summer's here,
and it belongs to Fox

Takes the first week in 18-49s, way ahead of No. 2

Jun 6, 2007
Share |

Fox was the hottest network over the final four months of the TV season, and it’s carrying that streak into summer. The network dominated the first full week of the slow summer season and looks poised to do so for weeks to come.

Fox took its 17th consecutive first-place finish among adults 18-49 for the week ended June 3, finishing well ahead of the other Big Five networks. Its average 2.6 rating and 8 share were 30 percent better than CBS, which placed second with a 2.0/6.

Perhaps most impressive, Fox had won seven straight nights among 18-49s through Monday, the best streak in Fox history for nights of entertainment programming that do not include sports. It betters a streak of six consecutive nightly victories last June.

Fox owes its lead to the delayed finale for one of its biggest hits, "House," and a trio of successful returning shows. But also working in its favor is the dreadful performances of the other networks.

“House's” delayed finale finished first for the week among 18-49s and total viewers. Fox held the third-season ender an extra week in hopes of giving new show “On the Lot” more exposure in the usual “House” slot behind the penultimate episode of “American Idol” two weeks ago.

Yet even without “House’s” dominant 6.7 rating, Fox probably still would have won the week, based on the performance of returing reality show "So You Think You Can Dance.” It will probably win this week with the help of "Hell's Kitchen."

Both are building on last year’s solid numbers. “Dance,” now in its third year, averaged a 4.1 rating on Wednesday, up 14 percent from its average on the same night last year, and two nights ago, “Kitchen,” also in its third year, averaged a 3.6, also up from last year’s debut.

And the regular-season surprise hit “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader” returned Thursday at 8 p.m. with a new episode and dominated its timeslot, beating Mark Burnett’s much-hyped new reality show “Pirate Master” by 39 percent.

In fact, viewers have rejected a slew of new shows on the other networks, making Fox look that much better by comparison. Of the roughly half-dozen debuts thus far, none have rated higher than a 2.5, and several have come in below a 2.0.

Viewers seem reluctant to try out new shows on broadcast, instead sticking with returning ones or checking out cable instead. Compared with the same week last year, 18-49 weekly ratings for CBS, ABC and NBC were all down by at least 13 percent.

Meanwhile, in broadcast ratings for the week ended June 3:

Among adults 18-49, Fox led with a 2.6 average rating and an 8 share, followed by CBS at 2.0/6, ABC at 1.8/6, Univision and NBC at 1.6/5, CW at 0.7/2, Telemundo at 0.5/2, MyNetworkTV at 0.4/1, Telefutura at 0.2/1, Ion at 0.1/0 and Azteca at 0.0/0.

Among adults 18-34, Fox led with a 2.6 average rating and 9 share, followed by Univision at 1.7/6, ABC at 1.4/5, NBC and CBS at 1.3/4, CW at 0.7/2, Telemundo at 0.5/2, MyNetworkTV at 0.4/1, Telefutura at 0.2/1, Ion at 0.1/0 and Azteca at 0.0/0.

Among adults 25-54, Fox led with a 2.7 average rating and an 8 share, with CBS at 2.6/7, ABC at 2.1/6, NBC at 1.8/5, Univision at 1.6/4, CW at 0.7/2, MyNetworkTV and Telemundo at 0.5/1, Telefutura at 0.2/1, Ion at 0.1/0 and Azteca at 0.0/0.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): 1. Fox’s “House” 6.7; 2. Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance-Thursday” 4.3; 3. Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance-Wednesday” 4.1; 4. CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” 3.5; 5. CBS’s “CSI” 3.2.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. Fox’s “House” 17.23 million; 2. CBS’s “CSI” 12.09 million; 3. CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” 10.75 million; 4. Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance-Thursday” 10.58 million; 5. CBS’s “CSI: NY” 10.10 million.

Bottom five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): Tie-85. CW’s “Supernatural,” “All of Us” and “Girlfriends” 0.5; Tie-88. CW’s “Veronica Mars,” “7th Heaven” and “Hidden Palms” 0.4.

Bottom five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 86. CW’s “Girlfriends” 1.47 million; 87. CW’s “Veronica Mars” 1.29 million; 88. CW’s “7th Heaven” 1.19 million; 89. CW’s “Supernatural” 1.17 million; 90. CW’s “Hidden Palms” 1.08 million.

Show on the rise: “So You Think You Can Dance,” Fox, Thursday 9 p.m. Fox’s summer dance competition is off to a nice start, last Thursday posting a 4.3 among viewers 18-49, up 16 percent versus the previous week’s 3.7.

Shows on the decline: “Miss Universe,” NBC, Monday 9 p.m. How times have changed. The famed pageant, which back in the ‘70s routinely attracted more than 30 million viewers, drew just 7.23 million last week, the lowest total since Nielsen began tracking it and off 25 percent from last year’s 9.65 million.
