Stunner: Fox
wins the week in sweeps

Perennial fall fumbler clocks its first November win

Nov 21, 2007

Fox has busted out of its usual fall slump in a big way this season. It was already the only network showing year-to-year gains during fourth quarter.

Now it has a weekly November sweeps victory for the first time in nine years, if by the slimmest of margins.

But perhaps more important to Fox, it wasn't just the hit medical drama "House” behind the win. Several of its rookie and less-noted veteran shows turned in their best performances in months or even years.

For the week ended Nov. 18, the second full week of sweeps, Fox took first place among adults 18-49 with a 3.4 rating and 9 share, followed by ABC and CBS in a second-place tie at 3.3/9. NBC was in fourth at a still-competitive 3.1/8, followed by the CW at 1.2/3.

It marked Fox’s first weekly November sweeps win since the week of Nov. 16, 1998, back when “X-Files” and “Beverly Hills, 90210” were still on the air.

Fox won three nights of the week versus one for ABC, which is leading in the month-long ratings period used to set ad rates for local network affiliates.

Fox did get a definite boost from football overrun, which drew the week’s highest rating for any broadcast show with an 8.9 from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday night.

But then Fox's Wednesday lineup was also particularly solid. The 9 p.m. reality show “Kitchen Nightmares” posted a series-high 3.2, creeping ahead of highly touted timeslot competitor “Bionic Woman” on NBC.

Earlier in the night, first-year comedy “Back to You” had its best outing since week two, averaging a 2.5, while lead-out “’Til Death” was up 13 percent over its season average, to a 2.7 rating. Are they great ratings? No, but both shows have seen week-to-week growth for two straight weeks since coming back from a two-week break for the World Series, a promising sign.

"You" and "Death" appear to be gaining at the expense of “Bionic Woman” and ABC’s “Pushing Daisies,” both of which have seen steady ratings declines after heavy sampling by viewers in the early weeks of the new season.

Fox was also helped by last Thursday's sweeps stunt, another celebrity edition of “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?,” which posted a season-high 2.9. Fox is up 11 percent on the night this season, from a 2.7 to a 3.0.

Sunday’s comedy block also did well, helped along by a strong football lead-in.

The 8:30 p.m. cartoon “King of the Hill” posted its best rating, a 4.4, since November 2003. “American Dad,” the animated lead-out of “Family Guy,” also hit a season high with a 4.0 rating, up 18 percent over its season-to-date average.

Fox's fall schedule still has some problem spots. The 9 p.m. Monday drama “K-Ville” posted the lowest rating of any drama on broadcast last week, and Fridays remain a virtual dead zone.

But those are fairly minor worries in a year where the network is up 17 percent season to date, to a 3.5/9, while the Big Three are down double-digit percentages.

Meanwhile, in broadcast ratings for the week ended Nov. 18:

Among adults 18-49, Fox was first with a 3.4 rating and a 9 share, followed by ABC and CBS at 3.3/9, NBC at 3.1/8, Univision at 1.6/4, CW at 1.2/3, MyNetworkTV at 0.5/1, Telemundo and TeleFutura at 0.4/1, and Ion and Azteca at 0.1/0.

Among adults 18-34, Fox led with a 3.3 rating and a 9 share, followed by NBC at 2.8/8, ABC at 2.6/8, CBS at 2.2/6, Univision at 1.7/5, CW at 1.3/4, MyNetworkTV at 0.5/1, Telemundo and TeleFutura at 0.4/1, and Ion and Azteca at 0.1/0.

Among adults 25-54, CBS was first with a 4.3 rating and an 11 share, followed by ABC at 4.0/10, Fox at 3.6/9, NBC at 3.5/9, Univision at 1.6/4, CW at 1.2/3, MyNetworkTV at 0.5/1, Telemundo at 0.4/1, TeleFutura at 0.3/1, Ion at 0.2/0 and Azteca at 0.1/0.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): 1. ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” 8.2; 2. Fox’s “House” 7.0; 3. CBS’s “CSI” 6.5; 4. NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” 5.8; 5. Fox’s “Family Guy” 5.4.

Top five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 1. ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars - Monday” 21.81 million; 2. CBS’s “CSI” 21.37 million; 3. ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” 19.60 million; 4. ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars - Tuesday” 17.59 million; 5. CBS’s “NCIS” 17.39 million.

Bottom five English-language Big Five shows (18-49s): Tie-96. CW’s “Aliens in America” and NBC’s “Bionic Woman – Sat.” 0.8; 98. CW’s “America’s Next Top Model - Encore” 0.7; Tie-99. CW’s “Aliens in America – Sunday” and “Life is Wild” 0.4; 101. CW’s “CW Now” 0.3.

Bottom five English-language Big Five shows (total viewers): 97. CW’s “Aliens in America” 1.99 million; 98. CW’s “America’s Next Top Model - Encore” 1.56 million; 99. CW’s “Life is Wild” 1.37 million; 100. CW’s “Aliens in America – Sunday” 1.13 million; 101. CW’s “CW Now” 900,000.

Show on the rise: “Boston Legal,” ABC, Tuesday 10 p.m. Thanks to a “Dancing with the Stars” lead-in, “Legal” drew its biggest Tuesday audience since January 2006, 11.36 million viewers.

Show on the decline: “Sunday Night Football,” NBC, Sunday 8:15 p.m. The New England Patriots may well be the best team the NFL has ever seen, but their blowout victories aren’t good for keeping viewers interested. Last week’s “SNF” game between the Patriots and Buffalo Bills, which New England won 56-10, averaged a 5.8 rating among viewers 18-49, off 15 percent from a 6.8 for the previous week’s game between the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers.
