The cable news networks weren’t the only ones to get a colossal boost from Tuesday’s election.
On Wednesday, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” hit a season-high rating with a show concentrating on the historic presidential victory of Barack Obama, who became the first African American to win the office.
Winfrey had been a big early backer of Obama, endorsing him before the primary season began and arranging fundraisers with her moneyed friends.
Wednesday’s episode averaged a 6.5 household rating, according to Nielsen metered markets, her best rating in some nine months. Among women 25-54, the show averaged a 3.6 rating, its best since February.
“Oprah” featured a panel of political figures, including Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, Gloria Steinem, David Gergen, Peggy Noonan and Henry Louis Gates.
Winfrey received lots of face time on the networks’ election coverage the night before, when she attended Obama’s post-election victory speech in Chicago’s Grant Park.
More than 71 million people watched election day coverage across 14 networks.
