Most Rosie night
for Daytime Emmys

Boosted by buzz over O'Donnell and 'Price is Right'

Jun 20, 2007
Share |

Should anything come of the rumored talks between Rosie O’Donnell and “The Price is Right” producers, CBS could be getting one very potent game show, judging by last Friday's Daytime Emmy Awards. The CBS special saw its first ratings lift in nearly a decade.

Just over 8.3 million total viewers watched the long-sinking awards show, its best viewership since 2004 and more than 2.2 million better than the 6.09 million who tuned in last year. The show rose more than 15 percent year-to-year in adults 18-49 and 25-54 as well.

It stopped a streak of year-to-year viewership declines dating back to 1999, though it was still at barely half the viewership the awards show drew a decade ago.

This year’s viewership boost came despite the fact that the show aired in June, after the May sweeps were over, for the first time since 1992. Fewer people watch television in the summer, and viewership levels for nearly every network are down this year compared with last, meaning fewer people saw the promotions for the show.

But lately daytime shows “The View” and “Price” have generated more buzz than anything else on television. That led many to predict that the Daytime Emmys would rise, though just how much was a bit of a surprise.

O’Donnell, of course, exited “The View” in a snit last month after an on-air spat with co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Her nine-month run helped lift ratings for the ABC show by more than 15 percent across every major demographic and made “View” the favorite in the outstanding talk show host category.

The women lost for the 10th time, but winner Ellen DeGeneres said O’Donnell, who did not attend the awards, actually deserved the trophy.

Meanwhile, Barker picked up his 19th and final Emmy for game show host Friday night.

His retirement has goosed CBS’s ratings for several weeks. A special two-part primetime tribute to the 83-year-old “Price” host, who retired last Friday after 35 years, averaged more than 14 million total viewers during May sweeps.

And a repeat of Barker’s final “Price” episode Friday night, which led into the Daytime Emmys at 9 p.m. Friday, drew 8.4 million total viewers, easily winning its timeslot and bettering the combined competition on NBC and ABC in the hour.

There has been much speculation over who will take over for Barker. Names like George Hamilton, John O’Hurley and Mark Steines have come up, but O’Donnell is certainly the most intriguing possibility.

She is hugely popular among women 18-49, and might even lure some of them away from “The View” if she joined “Price,” as the two shows compete in some markets.

But Barker, who has endorsed the comedian for the job, also said he’s not sure executive producers want a woman hosting the show. And the loquacious O’Donnell might not be the best choice to host any game show, where the host is supposed to let the game be the main attraction.

Meanwhile, in broadcast ratings for the week ended June 17:

Among adults 18-49, Fox led English-language networks with a 2.2 average rating and an 8 share, followed by NBC at 2.1/7, CBS at 1.9/6, ABC at 1.8/6, CW at 0.7/2 and MyNetworkTV at 0.3/1.

Among adults 18-34, Fox also finished first among English-language networks with a 2.2 average rating and 8 share, followed by NBC at 1.7/6, ABC at 1.5/6, CBS at 1.1/4, CW at 0.6/2 and MyNetworkTV at 0.3/1.

Among adults 25-54, Fox, NBC and CBS all led English-language networks, each with a 2.4 average rating and an 7 share, with ABC at 2.0/6, CW at 0.7/2 and MyNetworkTV at 0.3/1.

Show on the rise: “Gold Cup: Mexico-Panama,” Univision, Wednesday 10 p.m. The group match between Mexico and Panama was the most-watched Gold Cup game in the network’s history, attracting 4.8 million total viewers. The game was also the night’s highest-rated broadcast program among males 18-34 (1 million) and 18-49 (2 million).

Show on the decline: “American Inventor,” ABC, Wednesday 9 p.m. ABC’s hunt for an inventor is starting to get stale among viewers 18-49; the show posted a 2.2 rating in the demo last week, off 27 percent from a 3.0 the previous week.
