'Moon' glow:
CBS's big movie score

'Lonesome Dove' prequel is the most-watched film

Jan 16, 2008
Share |

Reality programs like “Celebrity Apprentice” and “Supernanny” have proven a solid draw for broadcast since the writers’ strike began bumping scripted series into reruns.

Now CBS has found another strong alternative: movies.

The network’s three-part prequel to the 1989 hit miniseries “Lonesome Dove” got off to a very strong start Sunday.

“Comanche Moon” averaged 15.8 million total viewers Sunday from 9 to 11 p.m., becoming the most-watched movie on broadcast in more than two years, since CBS’s “Hallmark: Silver Bells” in November 2005. It averaged a 9.4 Nielsen household rating and 14 share.

The movie also averaged a 4.7 among adults 25-54 and a 3.3 in 18-49s, the best numbers for a broadcast movie since ABC’s “Wonderful World of Disney: Santa Clause 2” in December 2006.

The movie, the fourth “Dove” spinoff, was filmed a year and a half ago and originally supposed to air last season, but CBS smartly let it sit on the shelf until it was needed. The time came this month, with the network’s stock of original programming dwindling.

The movie gave a big boost to CBS, which, unlike the other Big Four networks, has yet to premiere any new midseason programming. The network has been skimping by on reruns and a few leftover originals, but even fresh “CSI” episodes drew weaker-than-usual ratings last week.

“Moon” proved just the sort of strike-buster CBS needed both to boost it back into first place for the week among total viewers and get previews of its upcoming new reality shows in front of viewers.

The movie’s strength was, not surprisingly, with older viewers, the ones who watched “Dove” nearly two decades ago. That movie starred Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones as two retired Texas Rangers going on one last cattle drive.

The original “Dove” averaged an impressive 26.2 household rating and 39 share, ranking No. 15 among all miniseries, and even spawned a syndicated sequel in Canada that later made it to the U.S.

“Moon,” starring Rachel Griffiths, Steve Zahn, Karl Urban and Val Kilmer, traces the roots of the Duvall and Lee Jones characters back to when they signed up for the Texas Rangers.
