In summer, DVR
users turn to reality

Eight of the top 10 recorded shows are unscripted

Jul 2, 2008

Conventional wisdom has it that DVR users mostly record dramas, taking a pass on reality shows, and that is true during the regular season.

But during the summer it flips, with reality series the most recorded.

Thus far this summer, eight of the top 10 most-DVRed programs among adults 18-49, ranked on individual episodes, are unscripted. Just two scripted series, the season finale of ABC’s “Lost” and the premiere of CBS’s “Swingtown,” made the list, according to Nielsen data provided by Fox.

That may have as much to do with the nature of summer programming as viewers’ actual preferences. From May 26 to June 8, the most recent summer DVR numbers available, the vast majority of the broadcast networks’ original content has been either sports or reality.

Sports, along with news programs, don’t tend to have high DVR playback because viewers prefer to watch them live. That leaves reality as the big summer draw for DVR users.

The “Lost” finale, pushed more than a week after the May sweeps ended because of the writers’ strike, was the most-DVRed program, gaining a hefty 1.8 rating points from seven-day playback. Its full rating jumped 36 percent, from a 4.9 to a 6.7.

ABC had three more shows in the most-DVRed top 10, tying Fox for the most overall, with two episodes of “The Bachelorette” and the season premiere of “The Mole.”

Fox’s May 27 episode of “Hell’s Kitchen” ranked second overall, gaining 1.1 from DVR playback, with two episodes of the network’s “So You Think You Can Dance” tying for third with gains of 0.9.

All three were up at least 25 percent over their initial non-seven-day DVR rating, in line with the gains generally seen by top regular-season shows.

CBS had one show in the top 10, last month’s series premiere of “Swingtown,” which gained 0.4 with seven-day playback. NBC’s lone program was “Last Comic Standing,” also up 0.4 for its May 29 episode.
