Fox slips out ahead in summer ratings
By Toni Fitzgerald
Jun 11, 2008 - 1:20:48 AM

ABC and NBC have been getting the buzz with the NBA and NHL finals. But Fox seems likely to have the staying power this summer.

The network is off to another strong start, topping basketball-fueled ABC last week for No. 1 on broadcast. Fox averaged a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating and 8 share for the week ended June 8, solidly ahead of No. 2 ABC’s 2.2/7.

While ABC had the week’s top two shows with NBA finals games averaging a 5.4 and 5.5, respectively, Fox had the more consistent schedule. It put four shows in the top 10 and seven of the top 16. ABC had just two.

Once the NBA finals end next week, Fox stands to move even further ahead in the summer ratings based on the strength of its regular programming. Its top-rated shows are all reality series or reruns, while one-fifth of the other top 30 programs were sports events or specials.

Fox’s top show, “Hell’s Kitchen,” is performing particularly well after launching during the regular season for the first time. The fourth-year reality show scored the coveted post-“American Idol” spot on Tuesdays, but even after “Idol” went off the air, “Hell’s” has kept much of its audience.

The Gordon Ramsay show was the top-rated non-sporting event last week with a 4.4 average rating, 19 percent ahead of the No. 2 non-sports show, “So You Think You Can Dance.”

“Hell’s” is also well ahead of the same week last year, when it averaged a 3.7. In fact, aside from its three previous season finales, last week’s rating tied the show’s best-ever summer numbers.

That also helped boost Fox slightly ahead of the same week last year, when the network averaged a 2.4/8.

The other big difference-maker for the network this year has been the strong performance of its reruns compared with last year, when the reality show “On the Lot” was pulling dismal numbers.

Repeats of “House,” “Family Guy” and “American Dad” all ranked in the top 16 last week on broadcast, and if their ratings stay at the same level in the weeks to come, Fox will be on its way to another summer win.
