As it turns out,
Drew Carey's their guy

Ratings for his 'Power of 10' game show are ho-hum

Aug 22, 2007

CBS has its first indicator that it made a smart choice in comedian Drew Carey to succeed Bob Barker as host of “The Price is Right.”

Older viewers, the same ones who tune into “Right” daily, are embracing Carey’s new primetime game show “Power of 10” even as younger ones turn away.

The first three episodes of the show have averaged a 5.6 rating among adults ages 55 and over, according to Nielsen ratings analyzed by Univision Networks. By comparison, the show has averaged less than half that, a 2.3 rating, among viewers 18-49, sinking fast after its debut.

“Power” has won its regular Wednesday 8 p.m. timeslot among 55-pluses in every outing, virtually the only demographic Fox’s competing “So You Think You Can Dance” did not win.

In fact, only one show on Fox, ABC or NBC did better among 55-pluses than “Power” last week, the week ended Aug. 19: NBC’s older-skewing reality hit “America’s Got Talent.”

One might assume that any game show would do fairly well among the older crowd, as game show median ages tend to skew quite high. But that hasn’t been the case this summer.

Last week two other game shows, ABC’s “Set For Life” and NBC’s “1 vs. 100,” averaged just a 2.8 in the demo between them. It also certainly helps that "Power" airs on CBS, the top network with 55-pluses.

“Power’s” strength with older folks is at least partly attributable to Carey’s laid-back, personable hosting style, as the game itself is rather bland. Contestants must predict the answer to questions posed to thousands of Americans, such as “How many believe they are smarter than president George Bush?”

The first question is worth $1,000, and each of the next four questions increase in value by the power of 10, from $10,000 to $100,000 to $1 million to the big payoff of $10 million.

Presumably many of these 55-plus “Power” viewers are also potential “Price” viewers, as the latter has a median age of 64, the highest in daytime.

If Carey can endear himself to “Price” viewers before the show debuts in September, so much the better for CBS, which settled on the Cleveland comedian just last month after a long search. Since Barker announced his retirement last year, media people have wondered how longtime viewers will react to the first new host in some 30 years.

Meanwhile, in broadcast ratings for the week ended Aug. 19:

Among adults 18-49, Fox led with a 2.3 rating and an 8 share, followed by CBS at 1.9/6, NBC at 1.7/5, ABC at 1.5/5, Univision at 1.3/4, CW at 0.6/2, Telemundo and MyNetworkTV at 0.4/1, Telefutura at 0.3/1, Ion at 0.2/1 and Azteca at 0.1/0.
