Uncertain crown:
LSU and Ohio State

They play to determine the best in college football

Jan 7, 2008

Tonight LSU and Ohio State face off in the Bowl Championship Series Championship game at 8 p.m. on Fox. The winner is supposed to be crowned the national champion, but Georgia and USC may also have a claim to that title.

Both two-loss squads blew out their highly ranked opponent in BCS games played last week in a year where no top 25 squad went undefeated. When the two season-ending coaches’ and writers’ polls come out tomorrow, coaches are obligated to vote the winner of tonight’s BCS game No. 1.

But writers can vote for whomever they want. If LSU and Ohio State, perhaps the least-impressive pair of participants ever to play in the 10-year-old BCS title game, turn in anything less than awesome performances, expect the writers to crown a different champ.

That happened four years ago, when LSU topped Oklahoma in the BCS title game but writers named USC the national champ. And USC does have an advantage over Ohio State already: It eviscerated Illinois in last week’s Rose Bowl. The Illini handed the Buckeyes their only loss of the season in November.

A split national championship would provide a fitting end to what many have called the most tumultuous college football season in recent history. A slew of top-ranked teams were knocked off, as were a number of No. 2s, and national championship contenders fell in the final week of the season, resulting in the first-ever two-loss team (LSU) making the BCS title game.

What that means for Fox, which saw small ratings declines compared with last year for its first two blowout BCS games, remains to be seen. OSU has a large national following, but the rating will ultimately come down to the quality of the game. If it’s competitive, the game should draw a large crowd, though last year’s 28.8 million total viewers and 10.6 rating for OSU-Florida will be hard to beat.
