The do of Dixie:
Atlanta's Housewives

Bravo's 'Real Housewives' franchise moves south

Oct 7, 2008

For those who prefer the personal to the political, Bravo is offering an alternative to tonight’s second presidential debate. The new show “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” the network’s second spinoff of “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” debuts at 9 p.m., and it will probably have just as many personal attacks and catty claims as the debate.

This seven-episode edition of “Housewives” chronicles the drama-filled lives of five of Atlanta’s socially ambitious, including the wives of an NBA player and an NFL player. Two others are single moms, while another is an active volunteer married to a real estate investor.

“Housewives” launched in mid-2006 as a sort of real-life counterpoint to ABC’s hit scripted comedy “Desperate Housewives.” The original drew solid ratings, leading to the spinoff “The Real Housewives of New York City” earlier this year. Should Atlanta draw similarly strong numbers, there will probably be another city next year for a third spinoff.

But perhaps “Atlanta’s” biggest advantage right now is Bravo’s momentum. The network has had a great platform to advertise its newest show, coming off its best quarter in network history among adults 18-49 and total viewers.

Bravo averaged 477,000 18-49s during third quarter, up 32 percent over 361,000 the year before, according to Nielsen data. In primetime the channel jumped 20 percent, from 656,000 to 789,000.

That’s partly because the network offers a large amount of original programming. During third quarter it had a half-dozen original shows on the air, something very few basic cable networks can claim. Most roll out only one or two at a time, letting them play out before premiering any new fare.
