On the bubble:
'Rules of Engagement'

Returning second-year sitcom takes its best shot

Apr 14, 2008

“The New Adventures of Old Christine” aired its finale two weeks ago, hitting a season high among adults 18-49 and seemingly sewing up a renewal after posting strong numbers behind “Two and a Half Men.”

Tonight “Rules of Engagement,” the second-year CBS sitcom, begins to make its case for renewal when it returns from a writers’ strike induced hiatus. It takes over the 9:30 p.m. post-“Men” slot that “Christine” performed well in, and it has a lot to prove.

The latest rumor is that CBS will pick up “Christine” or “Rules” but not both, and the chosen show may return at midseason to make room for a new sitcom in the fall.

“Rules” has averaged a 3.9 rating this season, retaining a respectable 85 percent of “Men’s” audience, but its ratings slipped during its last month of originals. In its finale last month, “Christine” averaged a 4.5 rating, holding 87 percent of “Men’s” lead-in.

Even if “Rules” sees better ratings in its return, CBS may decide to stick with “Christine” simply because of its critical and Emmy cachet. “Rules” has been roundly dismissed by critics as another in the “King of Queens” oeuvre of slobby-men, pretty-women family sitcoms. Meanwhile, “Christine” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus won an Emmy for her performance.

In tonight’s episode, Adam and Jennifer take a trip with Audrey and Jeff, but things turn ugly after a timeshare pitch.
