TV This Week
On 'Stars,' battle of light-footed jocks

Do athletes, with their exceptional strength, grace and balance, have an unfair advantage on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars?”

It’s certainly beginning to look that way.

Once again, an athlete is favored to take the prize on ABC’s No. 1 show among total viewers, which airs its two-hour sixth-season finale tonight at 9 p.m. Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi and Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor will vie for the title along with actor Cristían de la Fuente.

Should Yamaguchi, the season-long favorite who earned a perfect score last night, or Taylor, who’s No. 3 with the judges but has a strong fan base, win, it would mark the fourth straight season that an athlete has taken the title. Emmitt Smith, Apolo Anton Ohno and Helio Castroneves nabbed the last three wins.

If Yamaguchi is victorious, she’d be just the second female winner in the show’s history, joining season one’s Kelly Monaco. The three couples performed on last night’s edition of the show, and tonight the viewers’ votes will be combined with the judges’ scores to determine the winner. The previously eliminated contestants will also return.

“Stars” will finish the season behind Fox’s “American Idol” as the second-most-watched show on broadcast. Though both the performance and results editions are down from last fall, to 19.7 million and 17.5 million total viewers, respectively, the performance portion is up slightly over last spring.

“Stars” does not have to face part one of the season finale of “Idol” tonight, but it will face some formidable competition in “Idol's” lead-out, “Hell’s Kitchen,” which posted a series high among adults 18-49 last week.

Still, “Stars’” strength is in total viewers, especially the women who watched Yamaguchi capture her Olympic title 16 years ago. She and ABC should finish the night strong, with little competition at 10 p.m.
