On Fox News,
deeper look into McCain

The special takes over Bill O'Reilly's timeslot

Aug 19, 2008

It takes something pretty unusual to bump Bill O’Reilly, cable news’ highest-rated talker, off Fox News Channel’s schedule, and it will happen for the second straight night tonight. At 8 p.m., the network airs the second in its two-part series “2008 Presidential Character and Conduct,” this one focusing on presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

Last night’s special, also airing in the O’Reilly timeslot, gave the same treatment to Democrat Barack Obama.

Though perhaps more coverage has been given to this presidential election than any other in history, the hour-long documentaries may present the candidates in a different light than the daily pundit horse-race shows that dominate the cable news networks.

The documentaries were envisioned to go beyond standard campaign biography into the less-publicized details of the big life experiences that have influenced the senators’ decision making. Both specials include interviews with family members, friends and colleagues of the presidential hopefuls, though the candidates themselves were not interviewed.

The programs, hosted by anchor Bill Hemmer last night and anchor Eric Shawn tonight, should draw decent numbers. There’s been a huge amount of interest in this campaign on cable, where it eats up nearly half the newshole on a given week, according to the Project for Excellence in Journalism.

O’Reilly averaged 2.62 million total viewers in his Monday and Tuesday outings the previous week, or more than the combined total of the competing “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” on MSNBC and “Election Center” on CNN.
