Not the usual post-convention speech talking heads

Aug 27, 2008

In years past, the Democratic and Republican National Conventions were limited to news organizations like CNN, PBS and the broadcast networks.

No longer. It seems this year there are more niche outlets than ever covering the conventions, from Spike to Comedy Central, but perhaps the most telling is TV One.

The network, aimed at African Americans, is running special coverage of the Democratic convention all week as the party prepares to anoint the first major-party black presidential nominee. TV One airs news coverage in primetime, then segues into a more laid-back, informal atmosphere at 11 p.m. with “The TV One Live: DNC After Party.”

Though other networks also bring in their talking heads to chat it up after the primetime speeches, this one is a lot different. For one thing, not all the guests have a political bent.

For every Al Sharpton or Marion Berry, who both will appear on the show this week, there’s a Paul Wharton, a fashion expert, or Huggy Lowdown, a professional gossip. Tonight Sen. Hillary Clinton will appear.

The show is as much about giving a cultural perspective on the DNC as a political one, which you can get from the cable news networks at all times of day.

And there will likely be a lot more presidential-focused coverage on TV One in the lead-up to the November election, with Barack Obama running to become the first black president. The network aired an interview with Michelle Obama earlier this week. And BET, the other African-American network, is also broadcasting live from the DNC and recently premiered a weekly news talk show.

Still, “Party” won’t get huge ratings. TV One is available in about 44 million homes, or less than half the number of major cable networks like ESPN or TNT.
