Now it's Michelle,
with Larry and Jon

Barack Obama's wife makes late-night chat

Oct 8, 2008

Last night Barack Obama squared off with John McCain in the second presidential debate. Tonight Obama’s wife, Michelle, takes over the Democratic mantle, appearing first on CNN’s “Larry King Live” and then on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

While Barack has appeared on Stewart’s 11 p.m. show three times, this will be Michelle’s first visit, and it’s always interesting to see how new guests react to Stewart. He certainly asks more probing questions than King, who previously grilled Michelle on life on the campaign trail back in February.

No doubt Stewart will already have an elevated audience as viewers tune in to see his reaction to the presidential debate. The elections are always a boon for “Daily,” which received a huge amount of buzz from its 2004 and 2006 “Indecision” campaign coverage, but this year may be its best yet.

The show is coming off the most-watched week in its 12-year history last month, the week ended Sept. 19. It averaged 1.94 million viewers, according to Nielsen, up 28 percent over its season average of 1.5 million viewers.

Oddly, the tougher "Daily" has been on politicians, the more of them seem to want to come on the show. McCain is a regular guest, and Obama appeared the night before the Pennsylvania primary in April.

The show’s next record-breaking performance could come in a few weeks. “Daily” and its 11:30 p.m. spinoff, “The Colbert Report,” will team up for a one-hour special airing at 10 p.m. on election night, co-hosted by Stewart and Stephen Colbert.
