Now, heating up
the mix, 'South Park'

Wednesday's at 10 is already fiercely competitive

Perhaps it’s no wonder that ABC’s “Men in Trees” has struggled so on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. the past two weeks. The timeslot has become extremely competitive on cable, where several top shows air.

Bravo has the recently ended “Project Runway” and the new season of “Top Chef,” while MTV offers “Real World/Road Rules Challenge,” a top 10 show among adults 18-34. TBS airs “House of Payne,” cable’s No. 1 sitcom, and TV Land’s “High School Reunion,” a new reality show, just launched last week.

Things will get even more competitive tonight with the return of Comedy Central’s “South Park” at 10 p.m. for its 12th season. The show is coming off of its highest-rated season since 2000 among adults 18-49, averaging a 2.3 rating, and its best since 1998 among total viewers (3.6 million) and men 18-24 (6.0).

The show dominated its timeslot last year on cable, ranking first among men 18-34 and 18-49 and viewers 18-49. That could cut into viewership for its timeslot competitors, both cable and broadcast.

It’s rare for a show this old to see ratings improvement, and much of that was due to the series’ “Imaginationland” episodes, which satirized characters from box office behemoths “Star Wars,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “Lord of the Rings.” The three-parter produced record ratings.

Tonight’s episode of the rude, crudely drawn cartoon focuses on Cartman, one of the show’s four lead characters. When the fourth grader is diagnosed with an incurable disease, he seeks help in a way that goes predictably awry.
