Moving in heavy
artillery: 'CSI: Miami'

CBS is out to break the curse of the 10 p.m. hour

If this can’t break CBS’s long-standing Tuesday 10 p.m. curse, then nothing can. Tonight at 10 p.m., CBS airs the second half of a two-part “CSI: Miami” episode that began last night.

It should draw strong ratings, airing opposite an ABC special called “Live to be 150 … Can You Do It?” and yet another “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” rerun. In fact, it could be the first time in months that CBS actually wins the timeslot among adults 18-49.

“Miami” had a strong return from its long writers’ strike-induced hiatus last week. Its first original episode in more than two months averaged a 4.8 adults 18-49 rating, easily winning its 10 p.m. Monday timeslot.

The show finished up 7 percent compared with its season average of 4.5 in 18-49s, and it put up its best rating of the season among 25-54s, a 6.3, 13 percent better than its season-to-date average of 5.6.

Tonight’s episode should at least double the 1.9 earned by the series finale of “Jericho” last week, the latest show to bomb in the timeslot for CBS. Since canceling “Judging Amy” three years ago, the network has had a steady stream of flops in the 10 p.m. Tuesday spot.

They include “Smith,” “3 Lbs,” “Love Monkey” and “Cane,” last fall’s highly touted Jimmy Smits drama, which is not expected to return.

Though it’s doubtful CBS would move “CSI: Miami” into the 10 p.m. slot permanently, since it still dominates its Monday timeslot, the network may consider moving another already established drama, such as the older-skewing “Shark,” into the slot next season, rather than trying to launch another new show.

In tonight’s episode, the squad works to find kidnapped Calleigh, and Horatio deals with his mysterious ex.
