Love so sweet it
has its very own Flav

Wackiest dating show has been a huge hit for VH1

At the rate he’s going, Flavor Flav may never find true love. VH1 won’t let him, not with his dating show “Flavor of Love” about to start its third edition as one of the most successful shows on cable.

“Love 3” premieres tonight at 9 p.m. against relatively weak competition on the broadcast networks and a chance to set some more records for VH1, where it hit an all-time high for the network last year.

The season two finale averaged 7.5 million total viewers and drew more than one-third of black adults 18-49 watching TV that night. This season, in order to build anticipation for the show, VH1 actually allowed viewers to pick the women competing for Flav’s affection via profiles posted on its web site.

There will also be some minor changes to the show, one of the most outrageous reality programs in television. Past seasons have included hair-pulling and spitting as contestants tried to impress Flav.

This season the 20 women will choose their own nicknames instead of having them doled out by Flav, whose past monikers included Buckwild, Like Dat, New York and Deelishis. Some new challenges will arise, and Flav will even go skydiving with them.

“Love” has been valuable to VH1 in many ways. In addition to pulling big ratings and helping to establish the celebreality genre that has become the network’s staple, it has sparked two successful spinoffs, “I Love New York” and “Charm School,” in which the “Love” gals were schooled in proper etiquette.

But assuming Flav does not make a permanent “Love” match this year, it could be quite a while before VH1 debuts a fourth season. The diminutive rapper recently signed to star in MyNetworkTV’s first-ever scripted sitcom, which will debut later this year.
