Jimmie Johnson,
nice guy, and for real

HBO profiles the top NASCAR driver as a regular sort

If the cameras are to be believed, Jimmie Johnson is just as amazing off the track as he is on.

He dotes on his wife of five years, model Chandra Janway, who is expecting their first child. He cleans out his own closets. And he's pretty modest for a guy who's won an unprecedented four straight NASCAR titles.

That's the man captured in "24/7 Jimmie Johnson: Race to Daytona," the new four-part HBO series premiering tonight at 10 p.m. that follows Johnson at home during the offseason.

Certainly the Tiger Woods fiasco reminded us that even when the cameras are ever-present, we don't always know our sports stars. But tonight's pleasantly mundane show suggests that Johnson really is the hard-working, blue-collar guy NASCAR followers want him to be.

That probably won't win him many new fans. But in an era where reality TV has come to be defined by the plastic surgery-enhanced girls of "The Hills" and the himbos of "Jersey Shore," it's at least a nice change.

For NASCAR devotees, this probably won't give a clue one way or the other whether he will win Daytona, but it will give a bit of extra exposure to the race, which airs on Fox on Feb. 14. Last year's race drew 16 million total viewers despite being shortened by rain.
