Jason and Molly:
At the altar at last

Special episode of 'The Bachelor' unites the two

Well, it's about time.

After 14 editions, a "Bachelor" couple has finally made it to the altar, albeit not the couple who got together in last year's finale.

Tonight Jason Mesnick, the titular bachelor on season 13, weds Molly Malaney, the runner-up in that edition, in a ceremony airing on ABC at 8 p.m. entitled "The Bachelor: Jason and Molly's Wedding." Previously one "Bacehlorette" couple married as well.

Technically, "The Bachelor's" long streak of breakups remains intact. On the season finale last year, Jason dumped Molly and proposed to Melissa Rycroft.

But on the post-finale special, "After the Final Rose," Jason dumped Melissa for Molly, saying he'd never stopped loving her even after popping the question to another woman.

"Bachelor" viewers were enraged, ripping Jason on online forums and voting for Melissa when she became a last-minute replacement on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" the week after she was dumped.

ABC could not have been more thrilled.

Jason's controversial move revitalized its aging dating franchise. The most recent season of "Bachelor," which ended last Monday, drew the show's largest average audience, 12 million viewers, since fall 2003, and last week's finale boosted the network to its best Monday night of the year.

Tonight's wedding may not draw such big ratings, partly because it airs opposite an original episode of Fox's "House" and partly because the anti-Jason fervor has cooled off over the past 12 months.

Besides, this story actually has a happy ending. Melissa wed her own bachelor a few months ago and is in the running to become the next co-host of "Stars." Neither would have happened if Jason hadn't dumped her.
