Hot as Hades:
Univision's newest soap

'Al Diablo con los Guapos' has the largest audience

Univision seems to have found a new successor to the formidable hits “La Fea Mas Bella” and “Destilando Amor.” More impressive, it’s found a show that can also stand up to “American Idol.”

It’s “Al Diablo con los Guapos” (To Hell with the Handsome) and it airs weekdays at 8 p.m. Its premiere last week, on Jan 21, drew the biggest adults 18-49 audience, 2.8 million, for any 8 p.m. novela in Univision history, bettering “Bella” and past hit “Rubí.”

But what’s perhaps most notable about the show, about a teenage orphan turned servant who falls in love with the grandson of her employer, was its performance in its second night, when it faced Fox’s powerhouse “Idol.” It actually grew night to night.

“Diablo” averaged almost 3 million 18-49s last Tuesday, up 8 percent from its premiere. Among teens, where “Idol” tends to dominate, the show averaged 453,000, up 42 percent over its premiere. In Los Angeles and Houston, “Diablo” even finished ahead of “Idol” among 18-34s.

The boost comes at the right time for Univision, whose ratings have fallen since the series finale of “Destilando” last year. “Diablo’s” strong showing throughout last week, when it accounted for five of the week’s top 30 broadcast programs among 18-34s, boosted Univision to No. 3 for the week in that demographic, behind Fox and NBC.
