Horror of horrors,
Spike's 'Scream 2009'

Awards show honors the best in sci fi and horror

Oct 27, 2009

Viacom apparently never met an awards show it didn't like.

First there was the "MTV Video Music Awards," followed by the "MTV Movie Awards," "BET Awards," Nickelodeon 's "Kids Choice Awards," Logo's "NewNowNext Awards" and "TV Land Awards." At this point it seems a Viacom network airs an awards show every week, and tonight it's Spike's turn.

"Scream 2009," honoring the best in fantasy, comics, sci fi and horror, airs at 10 p.m., though it was taped more than a week ago.

"Scream" essentially reaffirms a pop culture trend that's become pretty clear of late: Vampires are hot. The "Twilight" film, about a vampire and his human love, earned four trophies at the awards show, and HBO's "True Blood," about a vampire and his human love, earned two acting awards.

That could help boost ratings for the second-year awards show, as "Twilight" fans are a rabid bunch. The second movie in the series, "New Moon," debuts next month, and the teenage girls who make up the majority of "Twilight's" audience will tune in to "Scream" to see sneak-peek footage from "Moon."

For Spike's core audience of men 18-49 there's also a reason to tune in -- a best actress award for "Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen" star/internet pinup Megan Fox.

During third quarter, Spike's adults 18-49 audience slipped 11 percent, from 594,000 to 530,000 in primetime, according to Nielsen. But the network has seen record ratings for its Ultimate Fighting Championship coverage in recent weeks.
