He's back, Dennis
Miller, doing sports

This time he's on Versus, his aim to chat and riff

Dennis Miller’s last stint in sports television was nothing short of disastrous. The comedian and pigskin novice lasted two seasons in ABC’s “Monday Night Football” booth in the network's widely ridiculed effort to draw a new fan base to the fading program.

Five years after his “MNF” gig ended, Miller is returning to sports TV with a new weekly series called “Sports Unfiltered with Dennis Miller,” premiering tonight at 10 p.m. on Versus.

The show will be a hodgepodge of interviews, essays and monologues by Miller, who also hosted a short-lived 2004-‘05 program on CNBC that focused on politics.

It’s a big step for the smaller network, whose distribution now stands at 74 million households, compared with some 90 million for major networks like TNT and USA. Though Versus is best known for airing the Tour de France and, now in its third season, the NHL, it's a long way from becoming a mainstream sports network rivaling ESPN with its major sports coverage.

Nearly two years after it dropped the OLN (Outdoor Life Network) moniker, Versus still tends toward niche programming like pro bull riding, fishing and hunting programs, though it has also begun showing college football.

Thus wooing Miller, the biggest name to have been associated with the network since Lance Armstrong retired from cycling, is a nice coup.

Even if ratings for his show are tiny, and they will be, Versus will still get some needed buzz over Miller’s addition, helping to raise awareness of the Comcast-owned network as it continues its makeover as a non-niche sports channel.
