'Little People, Big World' captures the hard life

After several years of decline following the “Trading Spaces” craze’s fizzle, TLC saw growth last year, with double-digit increases in total viewers and the major adult demographics in primetime.

A big part of the network’s revival has come by focusing on reality series with a bit more bite than in past years, and one of those is “Little People, Big World,” whose third season premieres tonight at 8 p.m. with back-to-back half-hour episodes.

The series focuses on the Roloffs, an Oregon family whose mom, dad and one son are dwarfs. The first season boosted the network’s Saturday timeslot average by some 40 percent, and in season two the show continued to grow among the network’s target 18-49s.

This year it’s even being used as the lead-in to launch a new reality show premiering tonight called “The Secret Life of a Soccer Mom.”

“People” differs from most frothy cable reality shows in that the Roloffs, who also have regular-sized children, face not only the real problems of everyday life but also the bigger ones that come with being a dwarf. In tonight’s episodes, the family prepares for father Matt’s upcoming trial for drunken driving.

TLC’s primetime average jumped 16 percent last year, from 450,000 to 521,000. It was also up in 18-34s and 25-54s, according to Nielsen data crunched by Turner Networks.

That’s come as the network introduces edgier programming. The tattoo parlor show “L.A. Ink” has provided a lot of buzz as well as strong ratings, while tonight’s new “Mom” gives housewives the chance to perform their dream jobs with often upsetting consequences.
