For TNT's
'Leverage,' a second look

Ratings are just so-so heading into its season finale

The live-plus-same-day DVR playback numbers for TNT's "Leverage" aren't all that impressive. The show averaged 2.8 million total viewers for last week's penultimate episode, heading into tonight's second-season finale at 10 p.m., well out of the top 50 programs on cable.

But the show has been seeing very impressive seven-day DVR playback in a competitive timeslot that includes CBS's "CSI: NY," ABC's "Ugly Betty," USA's "Psych" and Soapnet's "Being Erica."

For its first two episodes, the most recent numbers available, "Leverage" built 66 percent in total viewers from L+SD to L+7, to 4.6 million, and 63 percent in adults 18-49, to 2.1 million.

"Leverage's" DVR following has helped the show, about a group of grifters led by Timothy Hutton, secure a third-season renewal.

In truth, TNT's threshold for renewable shows has gotten lower after disappointing results for "Raising the Bar," which was canceled for low ratings late last year, and "Southland," which TNT acquired after NBC axed the cop drama before even airing one episode of the second season. "Southland" has been averaging just over a million total viewers.

Meanwhile, TNT's primetime viewership slid 7 percent among 18-49s during January, according to Nielsen data, from 1.04 million to 969,000, though it remained the No. 4 basic cable network.

TNT has had some success with the new Ray Romano drama "Men of a Certain Age," which got a second-season pickup when "Leverage" was renewed. Though "Men" has slid steeply since its premiere, it averaged 2.23 million total viewers for its most recent episode, very slightly above TNT's January primetime average.

In tonight's finale, Hutton's crew hopes to finish a job involving an immoral mayor.
