TV This Week
For 'Shark,' that great sinking feeling
By Diego Vasquez
May 6, 2008 - 12:57:59 AM

With the broadcast networks introducing their new schedules next week, there’s been a flurry of speculation over the fate of the so-called bubble shows, and a larger than usual number air on CBS, which usually has the most staid schedule of any network.

There are a trio of CBS dramas still iffy for next season, and the most endangered may be “Shark,” the second-year legal show starring James Woods. CBS moved the program to Tuesdays at 9 p.m. last week, and if ratings for its first outing are any indicator, a third season may not be on the horizon.

“Shark,” about a hotshot defense attorney-turned-prosecutor played by Woods, averaged a mere 2.2 adults 18-49 rating, off 12 percent from its average in its original timeslot, Sundays at 10 p.m. In fact, it actually performed worse than “Big Brother,” the former Tuesday 9 p.m. occupant, which had one of its lowest-rated seasons ever.

The network’s other two bubble dramas are “Moonlight,” which consistently wins its 9 p.m. Friday slot, and “The Unit,” which performed better in the 9 p.m. Tuesday slot last fall. A fourth drama, “Cane,” which aired Tuesdays at 10 last fall, is considered a goner.

“Moonlight” probably has the best chance of the three for returning since it’s the only timeslot winner among them. Also working against “Shark” are rumors, posted on various web messageboards, that Woods has not had a smooth relationship with CBS.

On tonight’s episode, Sebastian (Woods) heads to Las Vegas for a gambling jag after being disbarred in California, but instead he winds up involved in a murder trial.
